Spending time in nature has been shown to have a variety of mental health benefits.
Studies have found that simply being in a natural environment, whether it's a forest, park, or beach, can reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. The sights, sounds, and scents of the outdoors can help to lower cortisol levels and promote a sense of relaxation and well-being. Asheville, NC, nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural world. With its lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic mountain views, Asheville offers a plethora of outdoor adventures just waiting to be discovered. Here are a few of our therapists’ favorite places to connect with the great outdoors!
Mike:
My favorite place to go to connect with nature and be mindful is the Balsam Nature Trail at Mt Mitchell. As soon as you step onto the trail you are transported to what feels like a different world and time. Conifers grow in tight formations and provide a canopy for an endless sea of ferns, moss, lichen, and mushrooms. Then of course you get to the end and get to see a 360 view from the tallest peak East of the Mississippi, but to me, that's just the icing on the cake.
Jill:
The upper falls of Catawba Falls have a special place in my heart. I love the combination of working up a sweat from using the ropes to get to the top and then being able to plunge into the pool and float on my back with the fall flowing above.
Joyce:
A favorite place to spend time outdoors is the Laurel River Trail. The even grade makes for a pleasant stroll, with several places ideal to pause for a leisurely break. Spending time tucked away on this trail offers an opportunity to slow down and notice the flowing water, stoic cliff faces, and cheerful wildflowers.
Will:
I really enjoy visiting Black Balsam off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The hour-long ride along the parkway is beautiful, cathartic, and fun to drive. Then, after a quick hike through the forest, you enter onto the vast bald ridgeline. This unique geological feature of the Blue Ridge mountains offers massive vistas and a pleasant stroll across the ridge at high elevation.
Alissa:
I love hiking Graveyard Fields all season round. The trail takes you through a striking mix of terrains, from open meadows dotted with wildflowers to dense forests and serene streams. And waterfalls! You're transported through different landscapes, making it a perfect "all in one" hike.
Ty:
The Daniel Ridge Loop trail offers a neat experience as you hike through tranquil forests to the tune of the chitterings of birds until you are greeted by the sounds of trickling water. The highlight of the hike is the arrival at the enchanting Tom Spring Waterfall, which is nicely framed by the surrounding rocks and foliage. It's hard not to feel relaxed as you stand in awe of the beauty of the natural waterfall!
