As January gets underway, you may be inclined to make some New Year's Resolutions. This is a common time for reflection and goal setting. But, it’s no secret that more people make resolutions than actually stick to them. If you're looking for sustainable ways to achieve your goals, it's important to avoid unrealistic expectations and perfectionism. In this blog post, we'll explain how you can make your New Year's resolutions more sustainable.
Figure out what areas of your life you want to focus on
Determining where to start with New Year’s resolutions can be overwhelming. Focus on your values and what matters most to you! You might consider setting goals in the following areas: mental health, physical health, spirituality, finances, career, relationships, and hobbies. Try creating a list of your core values (the top 5-10 values that matter most to you in the long-term vision of your life). Use these core values to drive the direction you go with your goals.
Set realistic goals and expectations
Setting realistic goals is the key to achieving lasting change. If your goal seems too far-fetched or impossible to attain, it’s unlikely that you’ll stay motivated and committed long enough to see it through. Don’t try to take on too much at once. Big overnight changes are rarely sustained!
You might consider using the SMART goal acronym. Setting goals that are:
Specific— Include as much detail as you can to help clarify expectations. A goal that is too broad can feel unreachable.
Measurable— How will you measure progress or know that the goal has been accomplished?
Achievable— Find a balance for your goal that is not too easy or too hard.
Realistic/Relevant— Does your goal align with your values? Do your current circumstances allow you to reach your goal?
Timely— Is your goal long-term or short-term? Having a timeline can help you stay on track.
Implement strategies to help you stay accountable
If you’re tracking your goals, set up a system that works for you. For example, you may use a spreadsheet, journal, or online platform to keep track of your progress. Depending on the goal, you may choose to assess your progress weekly, monthly, or quarterly.
You may also use the buddy system to hold you accountable, have frequent check-ins with a friend, or even post your progress on social media.
Remember to go easy on yourself. Beating yourself up won’t help you stick to your goals. Slow and steady progress is best. If you miss a day or start backsliding, just start again.
Celebrate successes and leave room for imperfection
When something is going well, celebrate yourself! Celebrating small wins can help keep you motivated when you hit bumps along the way (and you will hit bumps along the way). When the bumps come up, be gentle with yourself. You might practice self-compassion by allowing for imperfection and reminding yourself that everyone experiences these “bumps.” This doesn’t have to be harsh and rigid— it can be fun and empowering!
At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to set goals. We all have different values, priorities, and needs, so what works for one person may not work as well for another. The key is taking action and being flexible enough to make changes along the way if necessary!
